My name is Rosie and although I am now 28, I had been in care from the age of 5 - 21!
I'll tell you my story...
I came into care with my two sisters when I was 5 years old. Over a few years we all got split up and went to various different foster homes until I was reunited with them when I was 11. At age 11 I fell in love with my 'forever family', I never thought this would happen, as I had been let down before when I thought I had found my 'forever family'.
I stayed living with my new family until I was 22. Throughout this time I completed High School, College, a University Degree and a Master of Arts. Things weren't completely 'normal' as I still had to have my 6 monthly reviews and social worker visits but life was as good as it could have been so I decided to optimise on this and, as my foster mum would say "I jumped through the open window of opportunity".
I knew from an early age that I wanted to travel the world and not have to say no to new experiences and the only way I could do this was by working hard in my education which I did and it was the best decision I ever made! I never knew what career I wanted but knew that it was one that would be more fruitful with a good education. However, I didn't just get a good education, whilst at University I got to experience new cultures, made new friends and travelled the world but most importantly I became independent. I developed the confidence to make my own decisions and learnt to appreciate the life I had.
I found that as long as I was trying to educate myself then everyone wanted to support me, from social services to charities to my foster family and friends. My tuition fees and accommodation were paid for by social services whilst I was at university and I found myself a few part time jobs to enhance the social side of university. As I grew in confidence I also grew in ambition and I felt like the world was my oyster.
As I said I am now 28, I have a good career and have bought my first house. I have just started my own family and truly believe that had I not have chosen the path of education then my life would be very different today.
Thank you to everyone who helped me along my journey, I now want to help others like me along their educational journeys. My message is:
"If I can do it then so can other care children"
